After being adopted at the age of 8, Tim moved from Washington state to California where he built a new life with his adoptive parents. Even though his relationship with them was a loving and supportive one, Tim found himself navigating the challenges of homelessness as a late teen. While unhoused, Tim expressed he had to quickly mature and actively sought a path "off the streets."

Introduced to Would Works through his dedicated case worker at Jovenes, Tim joined our Beginners Builders Program, discovering a profound passion for woodworking. His unwavering determination, continuous practice and dedication propelled him into our advanced Community Builders Program, where he learned advanced woodworking skills that in turn landed him further paid training with one of our lumber partners, Angel City Lumber, after he completed his one year term at Would Works.

Reflecting on his journey, Tim emphasizes, "It may not be perfect the first time, but that makes me want to work on it until it is."

Immersed in the workshop, he discovered a meditative state that not only aided his focus but also deepened his connection with the pieces he crafted. He finds there are many similarities between his new woodworking practice and his training in the sport of boxing.

Tim appreciates the sense of community fostered at Would Works, describing it as a place where individuals come together to uplift and support each other, utilizing acquired skills for future endeavors.

“To be a part of a community that wants to help each other and build each other up and use those skills onward, it’s the perfect place to be.”
