At SCANPH, Would Works Debuts Furniture Collection - LA Timber Bridge

Would Works was thrilled to be an exhibitor at the 35th Annual Southern California Association of Non Profit Housing Conference this past week! We shared with non profit housing developers our newest collection of outdoor furniture, LA Timber Bridge, designed specifically for use in permanent supportive and affordable housing sites.

Supported by the Wood Innovation grant from the USDA Forest Service, Would Works was able to achieve two goals in the creation of this furniture collection:

  1. Pilot our advanced training program, Community Builders Program (CBP), to teach our Artisans how to fabricate furniture, apply advanced building techniques and utilize heavy machinery like the jointer, planer, ShopBot CNC and Shaper Origin
  2. In partnership with Angel City Lumberdiverted 35 damaged old growth logs from the Angeles National Forest from going to the landfill and created 12,878 board feet of usable lumber from the city’s very own backyard!

Not only was exhibiting at SCANPH an exciting way to connect to the broader non profit housing world, it was also an opportunity for caseworkers and program directors of various supportive employment services to learn about our paid training program through our Artisans themselves.

We thank Nick Friend and Bartek Malecki of Century Housing and Stephanie Ragle of office42 architecture for encouraging us to take this leap. Keep following along to see how CBP develops as a program and which housing sites in LA purchase our pieces for their communal spaces!

Despite our best efforts, it has become clear that the current climate is not in our favor.

Beyond woodworking, Nick Offerman highlights the “incredibly benevolent and warm humanism” at the heart of Would Works. "We're giving people … mental health, counseling, job counseling, life coaching. It's a place to say, 'Come on in, I see you, I care about you, I recognize the trouble you might be having. Here's a sandwich, here's a bowl of soup. Now, this is a hand plane,'" Offerman said.
